I’ve been unsure about college lately…

I’ve written a post about my college plan but I may not go with it. I’m unsure. Why?
- Possibility of wasting my time doing a college course that I could do at home and by myself. I will be majoring in philosophy, not anything STEM related. I was going to do Nursing but then I gave up because while I like Nursing I lean more towards philosophy and theology.
- Wasting my parent’s money and getting into debt.
- Decrease in quality of liberal arts degree.
- I’m not going to get any younger and I’ll be hunting for a future husband.
- I want to get a part-time job right away because I have other plans. I want to focus on philosophy and theology by writing books and creating something. These activities may take years and I want to start early.

There are not many good philosophy courses in the world today – it would be worth checking out Ed Feser’s blog to get some ideas.
Presumably you have considered and rejected evangelical colleges which impose a strict standard of behavior like Wheaton Illinois (where they have a centre for study of CS Lewis and the Inklings)?
Presumably you have considered and rejected Mormonism (and Brigham Young University, which is also strict, I believe)? – Mormons have the best attitude to marriage and family, and have designed singles churches and web dating agencies to make this possible.
If you don’t already know it – you might look at the Thinking Housewife blog – the author (Laura Wood) may be able to advise you wisely.

Greetings bgc.
Presumably you have considered and rejected evangelical colleges which impose a strict standard of behavior like Wheaton Illinois (where they have a centre for study of CS Lewis and the Inklings)?
I prefer stricter colleges. My impression of evangelical colleges is that while some are strict the bulk of them seem to be liberal-leaning.
Presumably you have considered and rejected Mormonism (and Brigham Young University, which is also strict, I believe)? – Mormons have the best attitude to marriage and family, and have designed singles churches and web dating agencies to make this possible.
My impression has been that Mormonism is heretical and non-Christian.
If you don’t already know it – you might look at the Thinking Housewife blog – the author (Laura Wood) may be able to advise you wisely.
Thank you for the advice. Appreciated. Cheers.

I regard Mormons as Christian – in practice if not in their precise theology.
It is very much a religion of practice – of following rituals and rules, rather than of mystical contemplation; and becuase there are (almost) no professional priests their theology is relatively simple, down-played, and comprehensible to the non-expert – therefore Mormon theology is nothing like as sophisticated as some Christian denominations with nearly 2000 years more of professional development.
But then many evangelical, charismatic, pentencostal theologies are also very simple and heterodox.
Mormon theology is very beautiful, and on the whole is probably no more heretical than many other protestant and liberal groups whose Christian self-identification is seldom questioned – but it is certainly not compatible with Eastern or Western Catholic theology.
Therefore, I personally would regard Mormonism as potentially a valid path to salvation, perhaps (in an imperfect world – ie a non-Orthodox world, which is from my perspective the best and true-est path) the best path for some people under some circumstances.
